The Puerto Rico Capitals FC announced today, that will move to the city of Ponce, for their second season in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL). The Club that made their debut last year will start training May 11. "The organization is very happy and motivate with the reception received from the Mayor of Ponce, Maria "Mayita" Meléndez and her staff," declared Pablo Marrero, President of the Board of Directors.
In 2008 the Puerto Rico Capitals FC was the first team from outside the mainland US to play in the WPSL. The club operations include a senior WPSL team and a junior U-17 developmental squad. Dedicated to the long-term development of girls and women's soccer in Puerto Rico, the Capitals plan to field rosters that highlight Puerto Rican natives and players of Puerto Rican heritage.
The inaugural match will take place Saturday, May 30th at 7:30 p.m., against Palm Beach United. The game will be played at the "Paquito" Montaner Stadium, which as is the case for the Sola Morales Stadium in Caguas last year will be converted into a soccer field for the game. The inaugural match will be free of charge and will be broadcast via Internet".
"We are very excited to play in this great sport facility," said Carlos Aponte, Capitals General Manager. "We hope that the Capitals can improve the level of the Puerto Rican women's national team in the same way that the Islanders have helped the men's program," add Aponte. "This project is very important to our goal to win a medal in the Central American and Caribbean Games when they come to Puerto Rico in 2010".
The Capitals will return to play again in Ponce, when they host Miami Kickers on Saturday, June 27th and Florida Surge on Saturday, July 11th.
