Long Island Fury History

In our first three years of existence, the Long Island Fury of the Women's Premier Soccer League have won a national championship and established themselves as a powerhouse team with a .800 winning percentage. Nearly all the Furyites grew up playing in the Long Island Junior Soccer League, many under the tutelage of head coach Paul Riley with the Albertson Soccer Club.

In 2006, the Fury won the national championship in our inaugural season, joining the 1973 Philadelphia Atoms and the 1998 Chicago Fire as that rare soccer expansion team that won a national championship. An 88th minute goal by forward Rebecca Moros gave Long Island a dramatic 1-0 victory over River Cities FC from St. Louis in the national final. Midfielder Kelly Henderson, all of 17 years old at the time, was named playoff tournament MVP.

Goalkeeper Becky Wachsberger made 36 saves during the 2006 campaign and registered a remarkable 0.19 goals against average. The saying that "defense wins championships" certainly proved true as the Fury have given up a goal or less per game during all three seasons. We have had streaks of 642 minutes and 555 minutes without surrendering a goal.

The 2007 season saw the Fury play their first-ever home playoff game, a 3-2 OT victory over Tony DiCicco's Connecticut Reds, before being eliminated by the Atlantic City Diablos, 3-1, in OT three nights later in New Jersey.

The Fury were crowned Mid-Atlantic Division champions in 2008 and were eliminated in the playoffs in "The Thriller at Tully," a 4-2 defeat to the New England Mutiny in front of a passionate crowd.

Five Long Island Fury alumnae--Christina DiMartino (FC Gold Pride), Allie Long (Washington Freedom), Rebecca Moros (Washington Freedom), Alex Singer (Washington Freedom) and Sue Weber (Boston Breakers)--are all currently competing in Women's Professional Soccer. We are very proud of the fact that former Fury players make up 4% of WPS.

We would like to thank our loyal fans for supporting us at our games throughout the Northeast United States plus our wonderful sponsors who provide the funds to keep us dreaming! See you at our games at Adelphi University's Competition Field in 2009!
