Stevens (L) saves a smile for West Coast F.C. while Dallstream (R) assures another post-season berth for Arizona as 2009 winds down
SACRAMENTO, CA (07/14/09) - As the season begins to wind down for most who compete in the
Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL), the fortunate few are beginning to materialize and come into focus in the WPSL post-season picture. The 8-team East Conference playoff commences this weekend with the final berth to be determined tonight, as the 2008 National Semifinalist New England Mutiny (3-6-0 WPSL East) travel to face Bay State Select (who have already qualified).
Win and the Mutiny are in - lose or draw and New York Athletic Club (4-6-0 WPSL East) will capture the final playoff berth. A full breakdown with all the match-ups in the re-seeded East Conference playoffs (due to the weighted regular season schedule) will be released tomorrow, Weds., July 15th. Stay tuned to the official website of the WPSL at http://www.wpsl.info for full details.
In the Big Sky Conference, Arizona wrapped up their second consecutive North Division crown with back-to-back wins over the Utah Starrz this past weekend. The 2008 National Finalists now look to a possible match against South Division favorite Dallas Premier for the Big Sky berth into the 2009 Final Four, hosted by the Long island Fury at Adelphi University's Competition Field this August 1-2.
In the Sunshine Conference, Florida and Miami are neck-and-neck in the race to host the Midwest champion for a Final Four berth, as undefeated Ohio Premier are in the driver's seat after their 7th win of 2009 on Sunday. In the two divisions in the Pacific Conference, California & San Francisco are going down to the wire in the North while South leaders Ajax America & SD United essentially knocked San Diego WFC out of the division race with wins over the SeaLions.
But last season's South champs West Coast F.C. still look to finish strong, and did so with back-to-back shutouts over the weekend's action. So, WCFC's young goalkeeper Emma Stevens and Arizona's star forward Kiersten Dallstream will share Player of the Week honors, in this the eighth & next-to-last edition of the 2009 WPSL Team of the Week awards:
F Kiersten Dallstream (ARIZONA RUSH) - WPSL Co-Player of the WeekThe Washington State striker returned to the Rush from England after spending two weeks with the U.S. Under-23 National Team, and within 12 hours of her return, scored a goal and an assist to propel Arizona to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Utah Starzz. This is her second appearance on the WPSL TOTW this season (Week 4 - three goals in two wins).
F Abby Crumpton (BOSTON AZTEC)The on-loan forward from the Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) scored a hat trick in a 3-0 win over Adirondack Lynx - and nearly netted a fourth - as the undefeated Aztecs now wait to see who they will face this weekend in the East Conference playoffs.
F Sydney Stoll (NEW ENGLAND MUTINY)The University of Massachusetts forward has begun to find her form for the Mutiny after returning from injury, and it couldn't happen at a better time, as she scores two vital goals including the game-winner in New England's largest win of the season - a 6-0 verdict over Philadelphia.
MF Kylie Wright (WEST COAST F.C.)
The UCLA standout played an intricate role in the 1-0 victory over Los Angeles on Saturday, taking command of the midfield both offensively and defensively. In Sunday's win against the So Cal Rush, she led the team by scoring five goals and two assists.
MF/F Cari Roccaro (LONG ISLAND FURY)A tactical switch for the young Fury standout at half-time made the difference in the 3-1 victory over SoccerPlus CT, as she scored the insurance goal to assure an undefeated regular season in the East - alongside the Boston Aztecs - for coach Paul Riley and his Long Island side.
MF Stephanie Barrett (NEW YORK A.C.)The former UMass standout (making her 2nd WPSL TOTW appearance) scored two goals in NYAC's 3-0 win at Maine, and her active and aggressive play in the central midfield helped keep the Tide's five midfielders at bay. NYAC now wait for tonight's result between Bay State & New England (need N.E. to lose or draw) to see if they will make their first-ever post-season appearance.
D/F Ro Hernandez (SAN FRANCISCO NIGHTHAWKS)Moving from center back to forward, the former WPSL National Champion medalist (making her 2nd WPSL TOTW appearance) made an immediate impact in the 2-1 win over Walnut Creek - assisting on the first goal just moments after the switch, and followed that up with her own goal two minutes later.
D Allie Fries (OHIO PREMIER)The Ohio Premier and University of Virginia alum anchored the team's defense - that has given up only one goal this year in Midwest play - in back-to-back wins over Chicago. On top of that, she scored a goal on a header off a service from a free kick.
D Lina Staropoli (MILLBURN MAGIC)The Loyola standout has been solid for Millburn all season, and led the New Jersey team to a 2-1 win over local rivals Philadelphia last Wednesday in their final regular season game. The captain and central defender marshaled the defense strongly as the Magic won their fourth in the last five matches and now look toward the East playoffs.
D Jen Valentine (PORTLAND RAIN F.C.)Portland has begun to string good results along late in the season in Pacific-North play, and the central defender was extremely solid in keeping F.C. Sacramento at bay in a 2-1 win.
GK Emma Stevens (WEST COAST F.C.) - WPSL Co-Player of the Week
The soon-to-be University of Nebraska Cornhusker - the youngest player on the WCFC roster - played the full 90 minutes in both wins this weekend. She was the key element in the 1-0 victory over the L.A. Rampage, as Stevens faced 14 shots while making two remarkable saves deep in the second half.
HONORABLE MENTION: F Fiona O'Sullivan (CALIFORNIA STORM) - the Irish international led the Storm offense in wins over Portland & Seattle the weekend;
MF Jenna Roncarati (BAY STATE SELECT) - Bay State can celebrate their first-ever post-season appearance thanks to the effort from the dynamic midfielder, who scored the tying goal in the 2-2 draw vs. Boston (the only blemish this season for the undefeated WPS affiliate);
MF Caty Harris (F.C. SACRAMENTO PRIDE) - the Pride midfielder led her team to a 2-0 win over visiting Monterey Blues on Sunday playing hurt, leading a determined attack that resulted in two late scores;
GK Ellen Kimbrough (FLORIDA SURGE) - once again, playing solid in goal for the Sunshine contenders while making key saves in a 3-1 road win at Puerto Rico.
